For today, we’re going to talk about what you can do once you’ve hired veterans onto your payroll, how to keep them there.
Now, veterans, as we all know, and I’m speaking in generalities, like to be part of a team. That’s what they’re used to in the entire military experience that they’ve had. Being a part of a team, and that team is accomplishing a mission.
Well, to put that in civilian speak, they want to be a part and they want to get the job done for you. And most of the time, getting the job done for you means increasing your bottom line, making you and your business, your company, your corporation, your team more efficient and more profitable. So, when you get the veterans — when you get those veterans on your payroll, when you’ve hired them onto your staff, you have made them a part of your team, well, then what? It’s really not very difficult.
You want to create a culture in your company that welcomes those veterans, the first step, and we’ve covered that before, but makes them feel perpetually, always, as a part of that team, that they are bringing value to your company, your business, as a veteran. Now, every employee you have should be bringing value to your company, your business, in some way, large or small. Otherwise, what’s the point? But for veterans, veterans feel the most comfortable, they feel the most productive, and again, I’m speaking in generalities, when they are part of a team and they can see a workable progress, a measurable achievement. Something that they know they’re working for, that when they’ve achieved that goal, then they want to know what the next goal is.
So, how do you go about that? You make that culture the overriding part of your team, of your business, of your corporation. Coming up in part two, I’ll go into a little bit more specifics on exactly how you do that. But to keep veterans on your payroll, to keep them a part of your team, you need to make sure that they feel like a part of the team every day. And that the people who work to their left and their right, to their front and their rear, the people who supervise them and those people who they supervise, all feel like a part of the team as well.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, let’s hope that it stays that way. Welcome to Vetted Employers. We’ll see you for part two next time.
